The Chronicles of Prydain are a series of epic fantasy novels by Philadelphia native Lloyd Alexander. The books were written and published in the 1960s, and were originally intended for children and young adults, but the work remains popular among people of all ages, worldwide. The five books in the Prydain series are based in part on the Welsh legends and folk-tales gathered in the so-called Mabinogion[1], the title given to eleven prose stories collated from medieval Welsh manuscripts. Mr. Alexander largely drew inspiration and nomenclature -- the craft of naming -- from Welsh legend, and created wholly unique and original characters, events, places and concepts using the older source material as a springboard.

Summary

The main character in the Chronicles is Taran of Caer Dallben, a sometimes impetuous boy who dreams of being a hero yet who carries a kind heart through his many adventures. Other important characters include the irascible and lovely Princess Eilonwy, the courageous and creative bard Fflewddur Fflam, the shaggy creature Gurgi, and the noble warrior Prince Gwydion Son of Don. The series tells of their many quests and struggles, not the least of which is their efforts to defeat Arawn Death-Lord and his many allies, servants and creatures.
